Kindergarten-Grade 2-When young James asks to keep a baby dragon named Ashley, his father, Sir Simon, insists, "'Dragons, no matter how small, do not belong in a castle.'" However, he does agree to give the boy three days to prove that his pet is good for something. James can't come up with a convincing argument until a giant comes on the scene demanding a bag of baubles, a harp that hums, and a pig that lays golden eggs. By no surprise, Ashley frightens the oversized intruder away and earns a place in the castle. Watercolor cartoons make the most of the medieval setting and round out the mildly entertaining story.
